Design great seven day Bermuda vacations using the details outlined below.
Bermuda vacations are some of the most manageable and satisfying available. The colorful sliver of land known as Bermuda is compact enough for you to sample just about everything in a relaxing fashion over seven days.
On Day 1 of your Bermuda vacation (preferably a Friday), take the 1.5 hour free City Tour of Hamilton in the company of Ed Christopher, the Town Crier. Starting at City Hall, he brings you to well-known sites like the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, Sessions House (home to the Bermudian Parliament and Supreme Court), Cabinet House (the governor’s office) and Perot Post Office. Ed also outlines the architectural features of the houses such as their water systems which are based on run-off rain water collection. After the tour, return to Sessions House and see the colonial government in action. It isn’t that government works differently here, it’s that some individuals wear powdered wigs as a hold-over from the British parliamentary system.
Begin Day 2 in Hamilton’s Par La Ville Park and enjoy
the Gombay Dancing
(only on Saturdays). After the performance take the ferry over to
the Royal Navy Dockyard
for a tour of the National Museum of Bermuda inside the Commissioner’s House. When you are finished your tour, take a casual stroll around the former cooperage building and the nearby Bermuda Rum Cake Company. Here you can often taste free samples of Bermudian foods like the spicy fish chowder and several local beers. Don’t forget to include a ride on the train as well.
Day 3 and 4 consists of a visit to Britain’s oldest surviving town in the New World and UNESCO World Heritage site - the town of St. George's. Take the city tour which starts out from City Hall. Your tour should be finished just in time to see “the Dunking of the Wench”. This housewife has already been found guilty in court of gossiping and nagging. The Town Crier has been directed to carry out the sentence. Remember to stand back so that you don't get wet. Follow this up with a visit to Tucker House for a tour. Next, stop at the Bermuda National Trust Museum in the Globe Hotel. The Rogues and Runners Exhibit is connected to the American Civil War.
You can also visit a replica of the “Deliverance”. The original ship carried much needed supplies from Bermuda to the Jamestown Colony in Virginia. Outside of St. George's is historic Fort St. Catherine where you can get some insight of Bermuda’s strategic importance and military history. Spend the rest of the day just wandering aimlessly through St. George’s historic streets with such names as Old Maid’s Lane and Featherbed Alley.
Bermuda vacations are not complete without visits to Verdmont, an 18th century mansion, and the Crystal Caves (Day 5). After your visit to the Crystal Caves, walk around the corner to the Swizzle Inn. This eclectic restaurant is home to one of Bermuda’s most famous drinks, the rum swizzle. On days 6 and 7, finish up with any sightseeing that you have missed so far and then head for the beach. Tobacco Bay Beach, next to Fort St. Catherine is well-known for snorkelling. You may wish to make one of your beach days a Sunday as most tourist sights are closed on that day.
Tips for Great Bermuda Vacations
1) Find flights to Bermuda and Bermuda accommodations through this website. Restaurant dining can be very expensive in Bermuda. Consider finding lodging with a kichenette if possible and purchase groceries.
2) Purchase the combination ticket for the Bermuda National Trust Museum, Tucker House and Verdmont.
3) The Crystal Caves is actually the site of two sets of caves: the Crystal Caves and the Fantasy Caves. You can visit both or each separately. There is a discount for visiting both however. If you only visit one, make it the Fantasy Caves as these remain in their original state. The Crystal Caves have been altered over the years and some stalactites/stalagmites have been destroyed.
4) Travel around the island is by bus, ferry, motor scooter or taxi. You can purchase
transportation passes
for the bus and ferry (good for both). Choose the pass that is best for you.
5) Remember to check the schedule for the last
bus
or
ferry
to/from your destination to avoid being stranded at the end. Otherwise you may be forced to take a taxi which is significantly more expensive.
6) If you arrive in Bermuda by air, you will not be able to board the bus with your luggage. You are forced to use a taxi to/from the airport. Drivers will charge you $2 for every piece of luggage that you place in the truck of the taxi in addition to your fare. Therefore try to limit your luggage to one bag only.
7) Enjoy great Bermuda vacations by knowing that the Bermudian dollar is always at par with the U.S. dollar.
8) Try the spicy fish chowder at Bistro on the Beach at 103 Front Street in Hamilton.
