Plan a Sightseeing Day Trip

Consider a day trip of sightseeing when you:

1) only have a day to spare (at a conference, business trip etc.)

2) want to deviate from your regularly planned vacation (i.e. a side trip to Tijuana from San Diego; Alexandria, Virginia from Washington D.C.; Andorra or Gibraltar from Spain; San Marino from Italy)

3) have a long layover between flights

4) go ashore while taking a cruise

5) want a "staycation" in a city/town near your home

6) any other reason you can think of

This can be a do-it-yourself excursion or an organized tour (if it includes everything that interests you and is cost-effective).

Ideally it is best to plan everything in advance in order to make the most of your day.

Use the following outline and the methods presented on this website:

1) Set your travel itinerary – prioritize the sights in order of importance to you; coordinate the opening/closing times to maximize your sightseeing time.

2) Locate a sightseeing map

3) Set your sightseeing route

4) Determine transportation to your destination - car, train, plane

5) Determine transportation at your destination (walking, local buses, subway etc.)

6) Check the internet for visitors passes to your destination. 7) Locate the Tourist Office and visit it as soon as you arrive. Ask for a local tourist map and any discount coupons available. Focus on admission to sights, restaurants and souvenirs in particular.

8) Check local tourist magazines for coupons and discounts.

Tips:

1) Read up on each sight prior to your visit.

2) Arrive before any of the sights open.

3) Eat a good breakfast before you leave or as soon as you arrive

4) Bring your own lunch especially if you are taking a tour and a meal is not included in the price. You can save more time for sightseeing this way.
