How to Plan a Hiking Vacation – learn how to properly plan for your outdoor adventure.

Not all hiking vacations are the same. While they all involve walking, they differ in:

• Duration

• The degree of wilderness exposure.

• How much you will “rough it”.

• Cost

Types of Hiking

• Organized hiking tour with a group. There is a pre-determined itinerary, walking distance and destination each day. Lodging and meals are prearranged. Your luggage is transported ahead.

• Independent hiking. This includes backpacking, camping and day hikes. You carry your own backpack and set your own travel itinerary.

Advantages of An Organized Hiking Tour

• All the details are organized for you.

• You don’t have to carry a backpack all day.

Disadvantages of An Organized Hiking Tour

• You must follow a fixed schedule.

• You cannot spend extra time on activities of greatest interest to you.

Advantages of Independent Hiking

• You can reorganize your travel itinerary as required.

• You can set your own pace.

Disadvantages of Independent Hiking

• You must carry your own backpack.
