See the highlights of Peru in Ten Days – plan your vacation using the outline below.
Peru is rich in Pre-Columbian civilizations; its history was strongly shaped by European outsiders. The scenery contrasts coastal deserts, rugged mountains and Amazon rain forests. Wealth and poverty stand side by side.
Many visitors are drawn here by the numerous ruins that dot the countryside. Machu Picchu is the most popular tourist destination. Travelers could spend years wandering around, enjoying the different sites. Many of the major attractions may be seen during a ten day visit if the planning and coordination are done carefully and the visitor utilizes tours.
Your entry into the country will most likely be through Lima.
Start Day 1 of your vacation by first arranging a 2-day tour to Nasca and Paracas (Days 4 and 5), a day trip to the ancient city of Caral (Day 3) and a half-day tour to Pachacamac (Day 2). These tours may also be arranged in advance using the internet. Shop around for the best price as the cost varies.
Spend the rest of the day touring the historic center of Lima. Take a taxi to the Plaza de Armas and walk around the neighborhood to visit the
Basilica Cathedral,
the Museum of the Inquisition,
the Monastery of San Francisco
and
the Convent of Santo Domingo.
There is a craft market diagonally opposite the Monastery of San Francisco if you feel like shopping for souvenirs.
Day 2 starts with your half-day tour of
Pachacamac.
After returning in the afternoon, take a taxi to
the National Anthropology, Archeology and History Museum.
Day 3 is a tour of
Caral,
approximately 3 hours north of Lima by bus. This ancient city is the third oldest civilization in the world behind Mesopotamia and Egypt. The site features six pyramids that are as old as the Step Pyramid in Egypt.
Check out of your hotel on Day 4 and join your tour group for a flight over
the Nasca Lines.
This tour likely does not include the cost of the airport tax at the Nasca airport. Your lodging for the one night will be arranged as part of your tour.
On Day 5, take a cruise to the preserve at
the Ballestas Islands near Paracas.
You will return to Lima that evening so you should have your lodging pre-arranged.
On Day 6, fly to Cusco and take the four-day tour. The tour and flight to Cusco (flight not included in the tour price) should be booked on the internet before you travel to Peru. Compare prices and choose the best one for you. Note that the tour does not include the cost of the plane ticket or the airport tax to/from Cusco. Day 6 also includes a half-day tour of Cusco and the nearby Inca ruins. Sites may include
the Cathedral,
Koricancha,
Sacsayhuaman,
Qenko,
Puca Pucara
and
Tambomachay.
Day 7 is a daytrip to
Machu Picchu
and Day 8 is a daytrip to the Sacred Valley.
On Day 9 you can either return to Lima (where you will likely land in the afternoon) or you may wish to take a three day side trip from Cusco to
La Paz, Bolivia
before returning home.
If you return to Lima immediately, pass Day 10 touring any sites that you previously missed and then return home.
Tips for Visiting Peru

3) Your primary mode of transportation around Lima will likely be by taxi.
4) Visitors must pay an airport tax for both internal and international flights.
5) Visit a travel clinic before you visit to Peru to check what vaccinations you might require. Travel to Cusco and Machu Picchu means that you must also consider
