Toronto Ontario – Plan Your Five Day Visit

Toronto Ontario, Canada (a.k.a. T.O., Toronto the Good, Hogtown etc.) is one of the world’s most cosmopolitan and multicultural cities. You can visit the best Toronto attractions over a 5-day visit.

On Day 1, take the TTC (subway) to Spadina Station and walk south on Spadina Avenue into Chinatown and the neighboring Kensington Market. Both sights are packed with bustling shops (herbalists, fish and meat markets, craft stores, clothing, furnishings etc.) and restaurants. Use this as an opportunity to assemble a picnic lunch while you ferret around the various stores.

Day 2 of your trip to Toronto Ontario starts with a visit to Casa Loma (1 Austin Terrace), the palatial home of Sir Henry Pellatt. Pellatt designed this castle by taking the best features of European castles and filling them with modern (for the early 20th century) conveniences. Tour the finely paneled rooms and learn about Pellatt’s life. Take the TTC to Dupont Station and walk 2 blocks north and climb the stairs.

In the afternoon, take the TTC to Queen’s Park Station and tour the Ontario Provincial Parliament Building. See democracy in action/inaction and draw your own conclusions.

End the day with a tour of the Distillery District for an evening of great food and entertainment.

On Day 3, take the TTC to Union Station and visit Sky Dome (the home of the Toronto Blue Jays) for a tour. Next ascend the nearby CN Tower for a bird’s eye view of the city. On a clear day you might even see Rochester, New York on the opposite shore of Lake Ontario.

Continue the day with a casual walk north along the world’s longest street -Yonge Street. While Yonge Street is actually 1,900 kilometers long and stretches from the shore of Lake Ontario to Rainy River, you need not go further north than Bloor Street. Ethnic eateries abound.

Day 4 includes a visit to historic Old Fort York, where the British first founded urban Toronto in 1793. Members of the guard are dressed in uniforms of British troops of the era.

No trip to Toronto Ontario is complete without a shopping visit to Honest Ed’s where “only floors are crooked”. If you can’t find what you are looking for here, you probably won’t find it anywhere in town.

Spend Day 5 at Black Creek Pioneer Village where you step back in time for a glimpse of 1860’s life in Upper Canada (the old name for Ontario). Wander through the period buildings and meet the staff dressed in period clothing.

Tips for Visiting Toronto Ontario:

1) Visit the Budget Travel Store to arrange your lodging.

2)For longer stays in Toronto, you may wish to purchase the Toronto City Pass for more sightseeing.

3) Here is the TTC website for transit information.

4) Assemble a great picnic lunch as follows: Global Cheese 76 Kensington Ave and European Meat Market 176 Baldwin St. for cheese and meat respectively. For bread and fruit, visit any of the local bakeries and green grocers.

5) A great dim sum restaurant, and my personal favourite, is Kowloon Seafood Dim Sum Restaurant at 5 Baldwin Street, approximately 2 blocks east of Spadina Ave. Considerr having lunch here on your visit to Chinatown.

6) Discount sightseeing coupons for Toronto Ontario Attractions.

7) If you have more than 5 days, consider a visit to either Niagara Falls and/or Elora. Each is about 2 hours away. The Niagara Falls Power Pass is available for sightseeing in the former.
