Purchasing a Camera

• Read consumer magazines for an expert opinion on the best cameras for amateur photographers.

• Visit camera stores and try out the brands and models. See how quickly you can react to sudden photo opportunities.

• Compare prices with those of online photography websites. Check out the websites below.

Advantages of a Digital Camera in Travel Photography

• Instantly preview picture(s) and delete the ones you don’t want

• Memory cards are re-usable.

• Can adjust camera’s sensitivity to accommodate the existing light.

• Can adjust the color sensitivity to the color balance of the shooting environment you are photographing in. The automatic mode allows the camera to set itself as required.

• Memory cards are not affected by xray machines and metal detectors in the airport.

• Not all digital images need be printed.

• Digital storage is cheap.

Disadvantages of a Digital Camera in Travel Photography

• A digital camera and equipment are more expensive than a film camera and corresponding equipment.

• The digital camera is dependent upon the life of the battery.

• The camera is more sensitive to being dropped or damaged.

• The cost per print is higher than that of film.

• The electronic image may deteriorate after a number of years.

Advantages of a Film Camera in Travel Photography

• Purchase price of a film camera is cheaper than that of a digital camera.

• No special equipment is required to view the images

• The image quality is currently better for film than digital.

• Film is available just about everywhere.

• Film development is readily available in most countries.

• Film development is relatively inexpensive.

Disadvantages of a Film Camera in Travel Photography

• Purchasing and developing film is an ongoing cost.

• Most travelers can’t afford to take multiple pictures of the same site as it wastes film.

• Cannot see the picture right away to check for quality. Must wait until it is developed.

• Film occupies more space than memory cards.

• Used film is affected by adverse storage conditions over the long term i.e. heat, humidity

• Film can be damaged by xrays.

Preparing for Better Travel Photography

1) Become familiar with your vacation destination and the sites. Develop an impression of what you might wish to photograph.

2) Read the camera manual to understand the features and how they work.

3) Take a photography course before you leave for your vacation. Practice with your camera.

Departing on Your Photographic Vacation

• For digital cameras, make sure that you have the proper voltage adapter plug for your travel destination.

• For digital cameras, fully charge the batteries. Remove any old images from your digital camera memory cards.

• Obtain a Certificate of Registration for your photo equipment from the customs officials. This receipt proves ownership and insures that you will not have to pay a duty when you re-enter your own country.

Taking Travel Photographs

• Don’t become so distracted by taking pictures that you fail to enjoy your vacation destination.

• Keep a travel journal to correspond with your sightseeing. Aim to tell a story using pictures. Record the date, destination and any feelings or sensations that you experience.

• Label your film canisters as you complete each roll of film and record this in your travel journal. Note that digital cameras automatically record the date and time that each photo is taken.

• For digital photos, take multiple pictures of the same site and choose the best one, deleting the others.

Travel Photo Etiquette

• Ask people for permission before you take their picture. If they say no then don’t push the point.

• Know the religious customs and beliefs of your destination and respect these in your photography. Ask the clergy or locals first. Photographing women is forbidden in some Islamic countries.

• Don’t photograph anything that might be connected to military facilities, prisons, police stations etc. You could have your camera and pictures confiscated. If in doubt, ask first.

Returning Home

• Develop the film or download the digital images into the computer. Use the free download from Google, known as Picasa, to manage your digital pictures.

• Create a scrapbook.
