Seven Days of Travel to Sicily - Visit Sicily to enjoy the warmth of the island’s residents, the flavorful food and a multitude of Norman, Moorish and Ancient Greek ruins.
Travel to Sicily can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your Italian vacation. Unfortunately this island is often overlooked in favor of the better known destinations like Rome, Florence and Venice.
The larger towns in Sicily, especially Palermo, can be quite chaotic. On the other hand, smaller locales like Cefalu can be quite laid back and relaxing.
You don’t have to worry about running into “the Godfather” however there are many Godfather (Il Padrino) items available as souvenirs of your trip.
Touring Sicily should begin in the capital of Palermo. Spend three days here and visit the cathedral (duomo), the Palazzo dei Normanni (the Norman Palace) and the macabre Capuchin catacombs on Days 1 and 2.
Day 3 is a day trip to Agrigento to visit the Valley of the Temples and the accompanying National Museum of Archeology to learn more about the ancient Greek City of Akragas.
Visit Cefalu (Day 4) with its strong medieval and Moorish influences en route to Catania. In Cefalu, enjoy a leisurely stroll through town and visit the medieval laundry (Lavatoia Medievale), cathedral and the beach to watch the fishing boats bobbing on the water.
Using Catania as your base, tour the city on Days 5 and 6. The Teatro Bellini is named for Catania’s favorite son, opera composer,Vicenzo Bellini. Other sites of interest include the Duomo with its elephant fountain, the city museum in the Castelo Ursino, the Monastery of San Nicola L’Arena and the Roman amphitheatre.
Day 7 is a day trip to the nearby city of Siracusa with its ancient Greek ruins. Sites of interest include the Parco Archeologico della Neapolis and the Museo Archeologico Regionale “Paolo Orsi”. These two sites may be visited with a combination pass. Other sites to visit include the Temple of Apollo and the duomo.
Tips for Travel to Sicily
1) Enjoy traditional Sicilian Pizza at the Eat Pizzeria in Catania – Via Coppola 42/44.
2) The last weekend in September is an Italian Cultural weekend. This usually means free admission to many cultural sites. This does not include churches however. Many of the sites above would qualify.
