How to Make the Best Use of Travelers Checks - start by learning the advantages and disadvantages of using them.

Travelers checks (also known as travelers cheques)are likely the safest way to protect your money while you vacation.

Why?

Because they are easy to replace if they are lost or stolen.

When you purchase them you are provided with a separate form on which to record the serial numbers. As you spend each one, tick off the serial number on the form immediately.

Remember to keep this form separate as you will require it to replace any checks that become lost or stolen.

What I don’t like about using these checks is that there is often a service charge for cashing them in a foreign country.

Another drawback is that they only exist in the form of the world’s major currencies (U.S. dollars, Canadian dollars, British Pounds, Euros etc.). What this means is that if you are traveling in a country where one of these is not the local currency, you will be charged an exchange fee when you cash this check (if you want your money in the local currency).

Finally there are some parts of the world where it is virtually impossible to cash them. If you find yourself in one of these places, make sure that you have other cash options available.
