Two Days of Uruguay Travel

Uruguay travel is very cost effective and a welcome relief from the "tango-like" atmosphere of Buenos Aires. Uruguay is more laid back than its glitzy neighbor, Argentina. Picturesque old Colonia del Sacramento and Monteovideo, the capital, await discovery.

On Day 1, arrive in Colonia by hydrofoil from Buenos Aires. Stop at the Tourist Information office just outside the Buquebus station and ask for a map of Colonia. Incidentally, Uruguay is one hour ahead of Argentina.

Tour the old part of Colonia (Ciudad Vieja). Wander around aimlessly and feel the stress melt away. When you are finished your Colonia tour, continue your Uruguay travel on to Montevideo. Arrive by bus and check into your lodging (preferably in the Ciudad Vieja of Montevideo – this would require a taxi from the bus depot however). Ask for a map of Montevideo.

On Day 2, visit the Mausoleum of Artigas and the Palacio Taranco. Shop for souvenirs and enjoy a meal at the Mercado del Puerta. Spend the remainder of the time touring the old town. Return to Argentina at the end of the day.

Uruguay Travel Tips:

Here are some tips for to simplify your trip to Uruguay:

1) Uruguay lodging

2) Bring an overnight bag to Uruguay and store the bulk of your luggage at your hotel in Buenos Aires.

3) Only a valid passport is required for visitors to enter Uruguay.

4) When you arrive in Colonia, store your luggage at the Hotel Esperanza (237 Av Gral Flores) for a small fee. It is not safe to store luggage at the bus depot.

5) The bus depot in Colonia is approximately 1 block from the Buquebus station at the intersection of Av Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Av Manuel Lobo. Buses to Montevideo are quite frequent.

6) A single museum pass covers the admission to all museums in Colonia.

7) Argentine money is widely accepted in Colonia but less so in Montevideo. In Montevideo, purchase some Uruguayan money at an ATM or use U.S. dollars.

8) You can acquire a map of Montevideo at the Radisson Hotel in the Plaza Independencia right across from the Mausoleum of Artigas.

9) The Montevideo Buquebus station is across the street from the Mercado del Puerta.
